Dr. Aman Chandra (B.Sc Hons. MBBS, FRCOphth, Ph.D., MFSTEd, FRCSEd)

Dr. Aman Chandra is a certified comprehensive consultant ophthalmologist in the UK with a special interest in retinal diseases, small incision cataracts, and vitreoretinal surgery. He is a consultant ophthalmologist at the Mid & South Essex University Hospitals in Essex. Research is an integral part of Aman Chandra’s work. He has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters.

He is a section editor for Eye (Journal of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists). Research lead and Audit & Governance Lead for ophthalmology at Southend University Hospital, and past Research Lead for the British & Eire Association of Vitreoretinal Surgeons (BEAVRS). He undertook ophthalmic training at leading institutions in London including, Moorfields Eye Hospital, St Thomas’ Hospital, and The National Hospital for Neurological Diseases. He completed two surgical retinal fellowships at Moorfields Eye Hospital (London) and The Royal Victoria Eye; Ear Hospital in Melbourne (Australia).

During his training, he led to research investigating the genetics of rhegmatogenous retinal detachments and ectopia lentis. He co-discovered the first genetic association of the former and has provided the definitive genetic analysis for the latter. For this work, he was awarded a Ph.D. from University College London, and the Sir James Syme Medal from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd). He has undertaken charitable work in Sierra Leone and Sri Lanka. He has a passion to improve care for the underprivileged in the world, in particular to those in the area of Balarampur. He plans to develop this through the “Mission 4 Vision” a flagship project of Balrampur Hospital Foundation, Balrampur UK, and B.N.Prasad Hospital Foundation, India. . With charitable ophthalmic care, he aims to improve the lives of many people along with their families.
